New Font: BigBlok
A great many years ago when working in game publishing I had a real fascination with doing titles in a strong, super-bold font called Bolt Bold. The truth is I rather overused it. In doing some research I find it on more than a dozen different game books I wrote in the early 80s, all quite collectable and out of print today.
New Font: Cantoria Initials
| After quite a few new fonts in a row with a modern look and two based on constructivist designs by Alexander Rodchenko, it seemed like it was about time to do something more antique and historic in character.This set of initials and accompanying uppercase characters is based on bas relief lettering by 15th century Florentine sculptor Luca della Robbia, most famous for his decorations in the chantry of Florence’s cathedral. The initials are designed to simulate the three-dimensional character of della Robbia’s work. Della Robbia created a dynasty of bas relief artists whose influence was pervasive all over Italy throughout the Renaissance and in traditional Italian architecture to this day. A few years ago on a trip to Italy I saw remarkably similar designs decorating buildings on the Island of Murano in Venice.

Featured Font: Abdiel
| Abdiel originated in 2005 as a custom design for a company logo. All they wanted was a few of the letters done in a flourished Renaissance style, but we decided to expand the effort for our own purposes to create a complete font with an expanded character set and lots of flourishes, taking humanist style lettering to a bit of an extreme with ascending and descending flourishes and some interesting alternate character forms as well. The result is very attractive and excellent for decorative uses where calligraphy might be called for, but the letters are still readable and fairly traditional in appearance. The basic letter forms are mostly traditional humanist cursive with a few variations, but the flourishes are pure fantasy, though not as extreme as some of the styles of the late Renaissance as found in fonts like Trinculo, Platthand or John Speed.

New Font: Serenissima
| Serenissima takes its name from a nickname for the city of Venice which means “The Serene One.” It’s a particularly inappropriate name considering what a huge and absolutely unserene effort went into the creation of this digital version of the lovely sample of 16th century lettering which it is based on. Serenissima may be the most demanding design I’ve worked on in years. The complex outlines and fine divisions between sections of the capital letters required unusual exactitude, so much that many of the character outlines had to be redrawn multiple times and then extensively tweaked and fine tuned to get them to look just right. It was an awful lot of work, but I think the results are worth it. The upper case characters are complex and unique and the lowercase is elegant and provides excellent balance for the overall look of the font.You can try the DEMO version of Serenissima for free with a limited character set.
