New Font: Barnabas

Our new Barnabas font is the result of our Dark Shadows font design project. It’s an original font inspired by the original titles for the Dark Shadows television show, but updated for a more contemporary audience with the upcoming release of Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows movie in mind. It combines gothic capital letters with  Latin small caps reminiscent of the original titles, but distressed and roughened to create a darker and more degenerate effect.

The name of the font was picked by voters on this page who preferred Barnabas (the first name of main character Barnabas Collins) to several alternatives. The sample graphic features a picture of the Corey Mansion which is the model for Collinwood in the TV series.  It’s also the first new font to include the OpenType version as one of the standard formats at no additional charge, which will be our practice from here out. You can try the DEMO version of Barnabas for free with a limited character set. Or you can ORDER the full version for only $24 online and download it right away.

Featured Font: Rosalinde

Rosalinde was first released in 1999 and it was one of our first attempts at an informal handwriting-style font. It is a bit more than just a regular handwriting font. It has some stylized characteristics and unusual character forms which give it a really unique overall appearance. I’ve always thought of it as a great font for doing a page of handwritten text or a poem, enhanced by the high ascenders and descenders. If you like the look and want a companion font which is more structured and more calligraphic looking it has a very similar weight and size to our Gaiseric font. This version of Rosalinde is updated with some improved characters and the addition of an international character set.

Featured Font: Gloriana

Gloriana was originally released in 1999 based on samples of hand lettering in an illustated childrens book from the early 1900s. It was one of several conceptually similar fonts we did during that period, including Gaiseric, Rosalinde, Scurlock and Folkard. For some reason Folkard was the big hit of the various fantasy themed fonts we did as part of that project and although Gloriana was the one which was most similar to Folkard and also one of the most interesting of those designs, it just didn’t take off in the same way. Now it’s time to give it another chance. We think its combination of hand-drawn personality, lots of alternate characters  and decorative elements makes it special and deserving of more attention.

Classic Font: Gjallarhorn

Gjallarhorn is based on uncial-style lettering by artist Willy Pogany from his titles for Padraig Colum’s classic collection of Scandinavian myths, The Children of Odin. It is reminiscent of runic lettering carved in wood and is evocative of the magic and mystery of Norse mythology. It has various peculiar letter forms, and the font includes two or more different versions of many of the characters, plus some unique decorative glyphs which fit the mythological theme of the font. It is an excellent example of stylized hand lettering by one of the great decorative artists of the Art Nouveau period, and works well for specialized and decorative uses. Strangely Gjallarhorn is not in our Viking Fonts and Art collection, but it should be added when we do an update of that package and it certainly goes well with it.

You can try the demo version of Gjallarhorn for free, or order the full version online with the alternate characters and special symbols.

Classic Font: Black Cow

Black Cow was originally developed back in 1998 as an addition to our Horror Fonts and Art collection. It has since been through several revisions with the addition of lots of alternate character forms. It’s a super quirky font with very odd wiggly characters with peculiar embellishments and an overall look which is somewhat creepy. The font includes a plain and a decorated version of each character plus third alternates of many of the characters as well. It’s great for doing titles for Halloween themed projects, which is why we’re featuring it this month. As for the title and where it came from, I’ll leave you to guess that for yourselves.

You can try the demo version of Black Cow for free, or order the full Black Cow set online with the complete expanded character set and the various custom weights and styles.

Tangle Font

Tangle is a fun font drawn by hand to have the look of twining vines, reminiscent of a grape arbor in the winter. The inspiration is from my front gate which is twined with an endless tangle of mustang grape vines. It was designed on a whim, but turned out pretty well. It has a full upper and lower case character set, plus numbers and punctuation and special characters. Maybe some clever vintner will notice it and put it to use on a wine label. You can try out the free demo version of Tangle for either MacOS or Windows. It features just the upper case characters. The full version of Tangle is available on our Ordering Site.
