New Font: Nostromo
| Nostromo is based on a sample of early 1900s period advertising lettering with a particularly dramatic personality and a look which really grabs the eye. The font includes all uppercase characters, with some variants, plus the unique feature that if you use the underline key it puts top and bottom rails connecting the characters before and after, creating a very striking effect. The font is playful but at the same time seems almost menacing. Ultimately it might find a place in our Steampunk collection. The name of the font is taken from the title of Joseph Conrad’s novel of the same name. The style of the font resonates with the name and it would have looked very appropriate on the cover of an early edition of the novel, had we made it 120 years earlier.

Fonts in Arthur Christmas
Took the kiddies to see Arthur Christmas today. The film was pretty good as animated Christmas fare goes. Light and full of action with some very good animation from Aardman, which has branched out from their long history of doing excellent stop motion work into 3D digital animation.
But for me a surprise bonus at the end of the film was a brief epilogue telling about the future experiences of the main characters, done in the form of Christmas chards, all of them done with our fonts, including Ganelon, Rossetti, Gaiseric and of course St. Nicholas. It looks like they just grabbed our Holiday Fonts and Art package and put it straight to work.

Holiday Feature Guide
Over the years we have produced many special packages and unique fonts specifically for the holiday season. Many of these were collected into our Holiday Font and Art Collection and others are stand-alone items such as packages of art for Christmas cards or special fonts for holiday designs.
Provided to the right is a short table of contents with links to most of our holiday related articles and packages, as well as some special fonts which are particularly thematically suited to the holidays. As you get ready for the season, use it as a quick guide to large selection of the resources we have available. I particularly recommend taking a shot at designing your own Christmas cards. The art in the Eleanor Brickdale Carols collection is particularly excellent for cards and we have a fine selection of fonts to go with the art.
For the next few weeks we’ll keep this guide at the top of the page and add links to it to some of the new holiday items we’re releasing this year.
New Holiday Clip-Art Mini Package
This year, as a special holiday offering we’re releasing a mini-package of seasonal clip-art with images based on mortised advertising cuts from the early 1900s. The images are based on printers oranments which would have originally been sold individually as brass plates to be inserted into a typeset page.
The seasonal images include lots of Santa images, trees, wreaths, bells, candles and all of the images associated with the holiday season, many of them in both monochrome and simple multi-color versions, with a charming vintage look. They are perfect for embellishing holiday cards or making labels for presents. Many even include open space in the design for addresses or names.
The package consists of 9 large-size pages of images, exactly as preserved in the printer’s type sample book from which they are drawn, published over 100 years ago. They are in high-resolution and should be printable with crisp output at fairly large sizes. Hatch Show Print Wine Labels
While wandering through the wine aisle at Target (not normally known for its cool wines or artistic experiences), my eye was caught by the striking label on a bottle of Argentinian Malbec from The Rebels which features a design by Brad Vetter of Hatch Show Prints, produced in their unique style and featuring many fonts, especially on the back label, which are similar to those preserved in our Letterpress Font Collection, including Big Show, Letterpress Gothic and Caelian. Hatch Show Prints has been doing amazing posters using traditional letterpress for about 150 years in Nashville and for customers nationwide.
It turns out that this wine is the latest in a series called “The Show” with Hatch Show Print labels. Each label is different, but they all feature a characteristic bucking mustang. The series goes back to 2007 and includes some very eye-catching designs on a wide variety of vintages. The Rebels or the Three Thieves who market the wines are a group of wine experts who find interesting wines from around the world, import and package them in this unique style and sell them under their label. I haven’t tried the wine itself yet, but if you can judge a book by its cover and a wine by its label then the wine ought to be a lot of fun. At Christmas time a bottle of wine under the tree makes a pretty good present.
St. Nicholas Font on The Daily Show
Our St. Nicholas font has become so closely associated with the Christmas holiday that it seems to be showing up everywhere with the season approaching. Last year it showed up on Saturday Night Live and last night it was used on a title card for a comedy piece on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with John Stewart, accompanied by a font which looks a lot like our Valentin font, but has some differences. Clearly there’s something about St. Nicholas which appeals to the graphic designers on comedy shows.
Classic Font: Swithin
| Swithin was designed to be our featured holiday font for 2003. It is based on samples of advertising lettering from posters produced during the 1920s. The whimsical nature of the characters and the decorative elements make it an excellent font for holiday cards. It features a full uppercase character set and offset small caps for the lowercase. It looks great on Christmas cards. Swithin is available singly or in our Holiday Fonts and Art package.

New Font: BigBlok
A great many years ago when working in game publishing I had a real fascination with doing titles in a strong, super-bold font called Bolt Bold. The truth is I rather overused it. In doing some research I find it on more than a dozen different game books I wrote in the early 80s, all quite collectable and out of print today.
