Sighting: Abaddon in New Greg Keyes Book

As I've written before, Abaddon is our most overused font. Everyone seems to love it, from fantasy book publishers to heavy metal bands like Godsmack. In its latest appearance it's coupled with the work of one of the best young writers of fantastic fiction in The Hounds of Ash a forthcoming collection of related short stories from Greg Keyes. Keyes' background is as an anthropologist and he builds extraordinarily interesting and detailed fantasy worlds full of rich and original mythology which draws on real-world archtypes but is often startlingly different. Every Keyes book is a must-read for me and you won't go wrong starting to discover his work with this collection.

Understanding Font and Image Licenses

I've noticed recently that a lot of people seem not to entirely understand the idea of purchasing fonts or images with a license, and I suspect they find the idea intimidating. It's not surprising, since it's a bit different from purchasing a toaster or a book, and not something most people do every day.

To help clear up this confusion we've rewritten our EULA (end user license agreement) to include not only the legalistic text of the license itself, but also colored sections which clarify and explain in some detail typical acceptable and unacceptable uses under the license to answer user questions in advance. Read More...

The Fonts of Spiderwick

With the Spiderwick Chronicles movie opening this weekend a lot of people are out looking for the evocative fantasy-style fonts used in the movie and in the books. I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that almost all of the fonts used in both the original books, the movie and the books based on the movie are from the Scriptorium.

In the original books the interior illustrations by Tony DiTerlizzi include lettering done in our Rackham font and captions done in Caswallon. Several other fonts are also used for titles, and while they don't appear to be our fonts, they are very similar to fonts in our Arts and Crafts collection, including Adresack and Palmyra. Some of the books also feature a font very similar to a widened version of our Rosemont font on the covers.

One place where our fonts did not appear on the original books was in the main cover title, which was done with some neat and quirky hand lettering. It seems a strange choice - I'm not complaining - but they replaced that title with a new title design based on our Summerisle font for the movie and for the movie-based versions of the books and merchandising. They also feature the font on their website for the text of review quotes. The movie related products also use our Guilford and Queensland fonts for secondary titles in places where the original books used a generic Arts and Crafts style font or Caswallon. The Rackham font also appears as the caption font on the bookstore shelf displays for new Spiderwick products.

So if you like the arts and craftsy look of Spiderwick, you need look no further for resources to recreate it, since you're at the source.

New Font - Gwionbach

Gwionbach was inspired by a highly decorated page from an antique Celtic manuscript where a combination of latin and Celtic letter styles produced an attractive hybrid form with lots of interesting character variations. Imagine the letters in the font outlined, gold filled and with decorative highlights. It also includes some special feature characters like special heavy weight over and underlines. The name comes from Celtic mythology. It's an alternative name for the legendary bard Taliesin. By St. Patrick's day of this year, Gwionbach will be one of several new fonts added to our Celtic collection You can try out the free demo version of Gwionbach for either MacOS or Windows, and the full version of Gwionbach is available on our Ordering Site.
